A&S 2023–2024 Awards Recipients and Faculty Promotions

College of Arts and Sciences at Cleveland State University Recognizes Outstanding Faculty and Staff at Annual Awards Luncheon 

On Thursday, April 18, the College of Arts and Sciences hosted its Annual Faculty and Staff Awards Luncheon, a distinguished occasion celebrating the exemplary achievements within our academic community. During this event, faculty and staff are honored to recognize both the awardees and faculty promotions.

Outstanding Staff Awards were presented to individuals who have exhibited exemplary dedication and service to the College of Arts and Sciences. This year's deserving recipients are:

Kinkoph.pngCarolyn Kinkoph - Administrative Secretary I
Carolyn's remarkable commitment to her role has been evident throughout her tenure. Having joined the History Department in 2016 and subsequently transitioning to her current position during the pandemic, Carolyn has exemplified resilience and adaptability. Her efforts in transitioning administrative work to digital platforms during challenging times have been invaluable. Additionally, her involvement in initiatives such as the Alliance Against Human Trafficking underscores her commitment to community engagement and advocacy.

Dr. Stone's leadership and dedication to student success in mathematics have been exemplary. His pivotal role in providing tutoring, organizing mock exams, and ensuring consistency and quality in course coordination have significantly contributed to the academic development of students. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Dr. Stone's innovative approach and unwavering support have been instrumental in maintaining academic excellence.

RoseLi.jpgOutstanding Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity Award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding contributions to research, scholarship, and creative activity. This year, we proudly honor:

Bibo Li - Department of Biological, Geological, and Environmental Sciences
Dr. Li's groundbreaking research in telomere biology has significantly advanced our understanding of chromosome stability and its implications for human health. Her prolific publication record, including notable contributions to journals such as Cell, reflects her scholarly excellence and dedication to scientific inquiry. Dr. Li's mentorship and commitment to her students exemplify her role as a visionary educator and researcher.

Shelley Rose - Department of History
Professor Rose's multidimensional contributions to historical scholarship and pedagogy have been remarkable. Her extensive publication record and innovative digital initiatives underscore her commitment to advancing historical research and education. Professor Rose's leadership in the Cleveland Teaching Collaborative and recognition as the 2022 Divergent Award recipient exemplify her transformative impact on the academic community.

RyanSotiropoulos.jpgJearl D. Walker Outstanding Teaching Award recognizes outstanding educators who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and mentorship. Professor Walker, the first recipient of the Outstanding Teaching Award, assisted in recognizing two faculty who earned this year’s awards, which are now appropriately named in his honor. This year’s recipients are:

Shawn Ryan - Department of Mathematics and Statistics
Dr. Ryan's exemplary teaching and mentorship have inspired and empowered students. His dedication to creating engaging learning environments and fostering intellectual curiosity exemplifies the highest standards of teaching excellence. Dr. Ryan's innovative approach to incorporating student collaboration and research into his teaching reflects his commitment to academic innovation and student success.

Karen Sotiropoulos - Department of History
Dr. Sotiropoulos's passionate commitment to teaching and mentorship has left an indelible impact on her students and colleagues alike. Her innovative pedagogy and dedication to fostering critical thinking have empowered students to engage with complex historical narratives and develop a deeper understanding of African American history. Dr. Sotiropoulos's leadership in promoting inclusive education and her dedication to advancing historical scholarship exemplify her role as a transformative educator and scholar.
