Internships Guidelines

Please contact our Director of Internships,
Dr. Elizabeth Pask (e.pask@csuohio.edu) with questions and follow
@CSUcomintern on Twitter for internship postings.

Prerequisites

  • Sophomore, Junior, or Senior class standing.
  • A minimum 2.5 GPA in Communication coursework. Students with a COM GPA between 2.0 and 2.5 need two letters of recommendation from Communication faculty and permission from your School of Communication Major Director.
  • Required Coursework. Students must have completed one Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) course with a grade of C or better. The internship coordinator can elect to waive this requirement for students who have completed equivalent coursework. Students must have completed a minimum of two 300 level Communication courses with a grade of C or better prior to enrolling in COM 490. The course content must be relevant to the selected internship.

COM 490 Enrollment Process

Step 1: Complete the School of Communication Internship Application to determine if you are eligible to take COM 490. Once your application is approved by the School of Communication Internship Director you can complete Step 2.

Step 2: Search for Internships. Start your search by accessing CSU’s Hire a Vike job board. You can also find internship opportunities posted on company websites, professional association websites, and online job search engines (e.g., Glassdoor, LinkedIn, ZipRecruiter). Employers must meet standards for experiential education, including supervision provided by a professional in the student’s chosen career field.

Step 3: Apply for Internships. The process for obtaining an internship is similar to obtaining a job. You must apply directly to the employer for the internship by sending your resume, cover letter and any portfolio items requested. For help writing a resume/cover letter and interview preparation check out Viking Resources or make an appointment with Career Services.

Step 4: Complete the COM 490 Communication Internship Agreement form. After you have been offered an internship, ask the employer to complete and sign the COM 490 Internship Agreement form. Permission to register for COM 490 is granted after a completed Internship Agreement form has been received and approved by the School’s Internship Director.

COM 490 Credit Limits

Students can apply a maximum of 3 credits of COM 490 toward their School of Communication Major degree program (see the elective section of your major check sheet). An additional 3 credits of COM 490 can be applied towards your university graduation requirements.
